1. Air conditioning or heat pump compressor: which compresses low pressure refrigerant gas into a high pressure, high temperature gas. Usually the compressor is in the outdoor portion of an air conditioning or heat pump system. The compressor is basically a high pressure pump driven by an electric motor. The air conditioning compressor is usually packaged in the outdoor compressor/condenser.

2. A condenser or condensing unit: typically a condensing coil inside which high temperature high pressure refrigerant gas flows, and over which a fan blows air to cool the refrigerant gas back to a liquid state (thus transferring heat from the refrigerant gas to the air being blown by the fan). The condenser unit is basically a coil of finned tubing and a fan to blow air across the coil. Usually the condenser unit is in the outdoor portion of an air conditioning system, often packaged along with the compressor motor discussed above. The change of state of the refrigerant, from hot high pressure gas to a liquid releases heat, including heat collected inside the building) to the outdoors.

3. A metering device which dispenses liquid refrigerant into an evaporator coil. The metering device may be simply a thin section of tubing (a capillary or “cap” tube) or it may be a bit more sophisticated thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) which includes a temperature sensing control that can open and shut the device against refrigerant flow.

4. An evaporator coil or cooling coil: typically the cooling coil is a section of finned tubing (it looks a lot like a car radiator) into which liquid refrigerant is metered and permitted to evaporate from liquid to gas state inside the coil. This state change of the refrigerant, from liquid to gas, absorbs heat, cooling the evaporator coil surface and thus cooling indoor air blown across the cooling coil. Usually the cooling coil is located inside the air handler.

5. An air handler and blower unit which provides a fan to blow building air across or through the evaporator coil. The air handler blower fan unit moves building air across the evaporator coil surface in order to condition building air by cooling it (and thus also by removing moisture from the cooled air).

6. A duct system which distributes conditioned air from the air handler in to the occupied space (supply ducts), and which takes air from the occupied space and returns it to the cooling system air handler.

7. Air conditioner controls and features, which include a room thermostat, electrical switches, fuses or circuit breakers, condensate handling system, and air filters.

Energy Consumption:

Your HVAC system is probably the largest single use of energy in your home. Systems are usually installed where they can’t be seen. They can be installed in the basement, a closet, on rooftops or mechanical rooms, making them too easy to ignore. The systems are simply taken for granted, that they will always function, until they fail. Decrease in efficiency, higher utility bills, discomfort, loss of productivity, premature replacement and higher AC repair costs are the reality. Getting your HVAC system checked twice annually is just as important as changing the oil in your car every 3k miles.

What should you expect your service technician to do during your Energy Squeezer Tune-up?

Check system functionality, safety features/controls and adjust the operating sequence when appropriate.
Inspect electrical components and connections and repair or replace or tighten as required.
Ensure proper airflow and change dirty air filters.
Inspect pumps, lubricate and check flow rates where appropriate.
Clean and lubricate motors as required.
Examine belts, adjust and align as required.
Inspect, clean and balance blowers as required.

Spring visit (getting ready for the summer season):

clean inside coil, condensate pans, condensate traps, and condensate lines to prevent obstructions.
Clean outside coil and straighten fins for efficient airflow.
Check refrigerant levels, and if low, find the leak and fix it. (According to many manufactures, a 10% refrigerant loss can result in a 20% decrease in the systems efficiency).

Fall visit (getting ready for the winter season):

Clean the burner unit.
Remove soot from fireside of burner.
Clean and check operation of humidifier.
Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks.
Adjust air-to-fuel ratio of burner and perform combustion analysis.

In addition: For heat pump applications, the inspection for the winter season repeats a number of the points for the summer season plus several additional checks. Maintaining semi-annually for heat pumps is also important.

Ventilation

Brandon AC Ventilation
When you want to move air, we can help. T&W installs a wide array of ventilation products and exhaust fans.

Ultra quiet bathroom exhaust fans. Noisy fans can be ineffective because people refuse to either use them or use them for only a short period. Yet todays homes and buildings are built tighter, have higher moisture loads, and need more controlled ventilation to maintain healthy indoor air quality.
Whole House Fans. Take advantage of the cool night & morning air to draw fresh air into your home and move it through the attic. You will receive a double benefit by moving that hot attic air out of your attic. These help lower your air conditioning energy costs.
Garage ventilators. Remove harmful automobile exhaust fumes and/or store chemical fumes.
Sub-area ventilators. Help keep your sub-area dry to discourage mold growth.
Attic Fans. Reduce air conditioning loads in the heat of the summer.

Air Distribution

Brandon Air Distribution
The best forced air system is only as good as the air distribution that serves it. Whether you are having an existing heating and cooling system replaced, or having a new system installed from scratch, a proper air distribution system is crucial for overall performance. A duct system that is not properly designed and /or installed will raise utility costs, lower comfort levels, and allow dirty air into your system.

There are 4 main steps to an efficient duct system:

1. Calculate CFM for the system and each room on the supply side.
2. Calculate CFM for the system on the return side.
3. Calculate proper diameter for the ducts and CFM at each outlet.
4. Determine static pressure for the system.
CFM: Cubic feet per minute

Duct Repair or Replacement

If your duct-work is basically in good condition, but perhaps has one or two broken or crushed areas, we can replace only the affected ducts. If your duct-work is old and falling apart, a complete air duct system replacement may be necessary.

Duct Cleaning

The intricate maze of air ducts, vents, and heating and cooling systems designed to make your home comfortable, may in fact, be making you uncomfortable or maybe even sick. Your air system plays host to a variety of pollutants, such as mold, mildew, and dust mites, to name just a few. We can deep clean the source of the air supply including (where applicable) the blower, squirrel cage, coils, condensation pan and return air system. We clean the register covers, the air ducts are brushed then vacuumed clean. After the cleaning we spray a sanitizing solution into the ductwork.

Duct Testing

Ducts not sealed properly cause leakage of unconditioned air into the duct system or can dump conditioned air into unconditioned spaces. Both of these reduce the capabilities of the heating and cooling system to meet the proper loads and increase energy usage. We can test for these leakages and remedy them by Duct Sealing.

Duct Sealing

Ductwork is sealed with UL listed duct mastic. This mastic is non-toxic and water resistant. After the ducts have the mastic applied they will have nylon panduit straps attached tightly to the metal collar at the beginning of the duct and the air distribution wyes. Unlike duct tape this method will not dry and peel away for the duct-work even after years of extreme conditions.

Air Quality

Brandon Air Quality

Whats in my homes air?

Remember the last time you saw sun beaming into your home through a window? All the particles you could see dancing in the sunbeam? Did you know these only amount to about 1 percent of all particles in the air? That leaves an incredible 99 percent much too small to be seen with the unaided eye. These pollutants coat walls, furnishings, and draperies and not to mention can cause extreme human discomfort. Indoor air pollutants can affect us all. They can especially threaten the health of young children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and more than 50 million North Americans who suffer from allergies, asthma, emphysema and other respiratory tract ailments.

Our highly knowledgeable team at T&W, Inc. can help you choose better indoor air for your family by installing indoor air quality solutions. Youll enhance your comfort and peace of mind.

Ultraviolet Air Treatment Systems zap airborne germs and prevent mold spore growth on air conditioning coils.
Whole House Air Cleaners trap a high percentage of airborne particles of the air passing through it.
Whole House Humidifiers moisturize dry air to optimize humidity for your home and health.
Air Exchangers ventilate your home to assure fresh air while minimizing energy loss.
Next Generation Air Filtration we offer various types and sizes to fit your specific needs.
Low Voltage air cleaners. Safe, low current DC power is continuously applied. This force field polarizes each fiber of the filter pad, giving each fiber a negative and positive pole-just like a magnet. Particles become polarized and are drawn to the filter similar to the way a magnet draws a paperclip.
HEPA air filters. A true HEPA filter certified to capture at least 99.97% of contaminants as small as 0.3 microns in size, such as bacteria, mold spores, soot, pollen, and other allergens and lung damaging particles. Don’t be fooled by imitations.
Various filter cartridges. There are several different options available. Even with a standard filter grille we can help improve the air quality in your home.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Brandon Dryer Vent Cleaning
Do you think your dryer is ill? Did you know there were 15,000 dryer vent fires last year? Don’t let your home become another statistic.

WE CLEAN DRYER VENTS

Symptoms:
1. Does your dryer take forever to dry?
2. Is it getting too hot?
3. Do you have high utility bills?
4. Is lint build-up around and behind your dryer?
5. Is there visible lint at your vent exit?

Dryer vent cleaning improves the safety and efficiency of your dryer installation. As dryer vents become filled with lint and other debris, drying time increases and can cause the dryer itself to overheat. This increases energy consumption since the dryer has to run longer to dry your clothes and can also cause fires in the dryer or the dryer duct. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports dryer related home fires are on the increase. CPSC figures show that in 1997 there were 16,800 dryer fires which caused 30 deaths, 430 injuries and 97.3 million dollars in property damage.

If you have noticed that your dryer is running longer than it used to you may need to have the dryer vent cleaned. Some dryer vents are relatively short and straight and can be cleaned easily by the homeowner, but others aren’t that easy and may require the use of special tools and equipment. We have tools specifically designed to clean dryer vents and with these tools we are able to do a thorough job of cleaning even the most difficult installations. While dryer vents are routinely blocked with lint, animal nesting is also another frequent cause of dryer vent blockage and our equipment allows us to remove these blockages as well.

Another problem created by blocked dryer vents serving gas dryers is the possibility of carbon monoxide seepage into your home. If the dryer is not exhausting properly to the outdoors, carbon monoxide can back up into the home.
